The music and energy in this scene is so charming. 6:58 I love how in this time period we see Amy being adult and serious, but as soon as she sees Laurie Amy reverts back to he younger self in that brief moment. Greta Gerwig's "Ladybird" 2017) received five Oscar nominations and lots of other awards. Rightly so, the film was a charming coming of age story. In 2019 it was time for her next film (actually only her second job as a director. Little Women. The novel by Louisa May Alcott from 1868/69 has already been made into a movie several times, but this is the first film that I have seen of this story. The film is nominated for six trophies at the Oscars 2020, including "Best Film.
The story is told by Jo and her three sisters, all of whom grow up with different talents and goals. Jo's main problem is that women are reduced to love and romance. She wants to change this with her stories, but of course it´s more difficult in the 19th century than she would like. br> In my eyes, Little Women" is a solid feel-good film that picks up on an important topic, even if many films have done it before. And in my opinion "Little Women" suffers from the fact that the message is occasionally conveyed with the index finger raised. I would have liked a little more subtlety here. The film also suffers from a little too much kitsch. Towards the end, this is explained relatively nicely on a good meta level, but it was still too much for me. Jumping between the past and the present could also have been implemented more effectively.
Some strong scenes are convincing, such as the story about the piano player Beth or the argument between Jo and Laurie. But the best for me are the great actors. Saoirse Ronan is great as always, Emma Watson can finally convince again with a multifaceted role and Florence Pugh is incredibly energetic and charming. Eliza Scanlen is very special as Beth and Timothée Chalamet has never disappointed me! The older cast members are also great: Laura Dern touches with her soulful depiction of the mother, Chris Cooper is just as strong and of course Meryl Streep, with whom you don't have to say much anymore. The perfect role for her!
The film is nicely filmed by Yorick Le Saux, if not particularly creative or exciting. Alexandre Desplat's music is very coherent and nicely arranged, but his score was used a bit too inflationary in the film. Less would have been more here and might have taken something away from the annoying kitsch.
Conclusion: Little Women" is nevertheless a nice film about growing up and what it means to be able to live dreams. It´s not the best film of 2019 in my eyes at all, but still worth seeing and perfect for a nice, emotional film evening.

Writer/director Greta Gerwig tries her hand at Alcott's timeless, semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story by spotlighting two different time periods in the lives of the indefatigable March sisters, with first-rate casting featuring Ronan as the free-spirited, aspiring storyteller Jo, Watson as the fashionable, domestic Meg, Pugh as the economical, attention-seeking Amy, Scanlen as the quiet, musical Beth, and their journey from childhood to young adulthood as they pursue their individual hopes and dreams during the 1860s. Even though it isn't a direct page to screen adaptation, and the overlapping of timelines can be taxing at times, Gerwig is able to stage many powerful scenes that explore the all-important themes of sexism, loneliness, friendship, love, and unbreakable familial bonds thanks to four fabulous leading ladies, and quality work from Chalamet, Cooper, and Streep who are invaluable in key supporting roles.

Louisa M Alcott based Little Women on her own life so in a way she did show ‘Laurie that letter by writing about it in her book. So the real Laurie found out she changed her mind I wonder what he thought. Thats an interesting move on her part... Laurie never had any women present in his early life so when he met jo he confused these strong feelings for romantic. they were platonic soulmates, which is just as beautiful and powerful. this is proven when he says later on that the love he has for amy and jo is ‘different, since hes actually found out the difference between romantic love for a woman and a familial love for a woman.

That's me telling the fboy I won't be second to his ex. And I won't be the person he settles for just because he cannot have her. and I'm ok with that. I'd rather be alone. Amy is just… goals.

Its annoyingly to listen to Matt speak when he is throwing F bombs with every other word. I loved the movie, but hated the fact that Jo and Laurie didn't end up together. I GAVE UP BILLIARDS I GAVE UP EVERYTHING YOU DIDN'T LIKE IM HAPPY I DID ITS FINE. This scene is one that when I saw it I wanted to send it to my ex. This adaptation made me resonate with both Jo and Amy so much. Even if she had thoughts about not wanting the baby, that doesnt make it less hard to have a miscarriage.

I've read that it says Laurie is hopelessly besotted with Jo he waits years for his love to be requited but Jo does not feel the same stay true to herself. The music is just so perfect jesus. I feel this scene so deeply because like Jo, I believe in freedom, and in feminism and that women shouldnt and dont aim only for love, but God, is that a lonely path to take. And admitting that, putting all of your beliefs aside, you still want your share of what society tells you should want as woman, jeez that is tough. And you can see her struggling to even let the words out. Like she is disappointed at herself that deep down she also wants what everyone else does, to love and specially, be loved. Jo is a Metathesiophobic - a fear of change. She finds no comfort in the future. She would prefer they all stay together, never get old, and play in the attic for always. But change is forever linked to the wheel of time. You can't stop it. Suddenly, all of this change starts happening rapidly in her life, as it does for all people when their childhood is at an end. Meg gets married. A dear friend proposes they marry (Laurie, what's the matter with you. Another sister is well on her way to marrying. (Amy) Then a beloved sister succumbs to illness. These are things that can't be undone and it's all happening too fast. This scene is a moment that is more than Jo grieving for Beth. This is Jo March grieving the loss of her innocence and childhood. As everyone else is going along with their individual lives, Jo has either consciously or subconsciously chosen to never grow up. Beth's death is what shook the foundation of her security, which as it turns out, was an insecurity. It's sort of a Jungian thing. We all have 2 stages of life. That first stage is all about accumulation. We are building a container and trying to fill it with stuff. Education, experiences, relationships, career, property, house, cars, children, and etc... We're on this goal centered path of obtaining all of this and a many of us can lose sight of the really important stuff. At some point we reach the stage where we try to figure out what all that accumulation means/meant. Most have to be initiated over to that second stage by one who has already crossed over, but life can force a premature crossing. Usually a traumatic event can cause it. Perhaps a death of a loved one or a divorce. Trauma has a way of forcing you to refocus on the important things of which you lost sight. A lot of people who don't cross over early will naturally find it at middle-age when panic can set in at the notion there are fewer years ahead than there are behind. This is when some people go in to crisis mode and try to accumulate all they ever wanted because now, life doesn't seem so endless. This is often referred to as a mid-life crisis. But back on topic: This scene is the painful crossing over of Jo March and she's fortunate to have a mother to guide her. We have to be brave to see life through to the end. Invariably, there will be more setback, loss, and hurt than accomplishment, gain, and joy. To truly live, you have to open yourself up to vulnerability... … you will love... … you will be hurt. If one is fortunate to live into old age, a great many you loved will pass before you, but if you did it right - the joy their memories bring will out-weigh all the hurt brought by the loss.
